Let’s look at the evolution of this muscle car from it’s creators:

Larry’s been tearing around in this car (he calls it “development,” of course…) and wound up at Goodguys in Charlotte in October.  He was there to do some autocrossing, and finishes FOURTH overall out of more than 30 entries, including ALL of the pro class cars!  Not bad for an ‘ol Camaro with a guy who started autocrossing this summer behind the wheel, wouldn’t you say? Click on NEXT  for more information and   photos!

Our first mod this time around was to stick more rubber at each corner.  We managed to fit 295/35ZR19′s up front and 345/30ZR19′s out back…without cutting the exterior sheetmetal!  Sure, fabricator Pete had to cut back into his inner fenders for clearance, but that’s a small price to pay for more than DOUBLE the widest tire available when the car was new!  Out back, we had some rubbing issues, so we replaced the DSE suspension links with chromoly tubing and Teflon-lined rod ends.  For more stiffness around through the cones we ditched the big 1″ splined sway bar in favor of a huge .250 wall 1.25″ bar, and we went with AFCO double adjustable coilovers at all four corners.  Inside, we added a pair of Porsche GT2 carbon fiber buckets and Simpson harnesses to hold us in place.  We’re better informed thanks to a full complement of STACK programmable gauges, and we feel cooler shifting with our new CNC milled shift handle.  A Sparco competition steering wheel finishes off the inputs.

Of course, the biggest change was bolting up a set of Forgeline centerlock wheels, 11″ wide in the front and 12″ wide in the rear.  We kept some flair with the polished lips, and the red locks echo the interior.  We dropped the car even further into the weeds now that it’s stiffer, and we can’t believe how this thing handles!

We’ve torn into the car again!  We’ve upgraded to an intercooled Magnacharger with 8psi of boost rather than the standard blower with 4psi.  This necessitated new coolers, and we went with an AFCO intercooler with twin SPAL fans as well as a CSR oil cooler with billet end tanks.  We’ve dumped some weight with a trick hood and decklid combo from Anvil, and JRi shocks are replacing the AFCO units.  There will be more by the time we’re finished!

Under the hood we added trick Katech valve covers and coil relocation brackets, upped the cooling with a new fan and baffled the power steering tank.  That’s the kind of stuff you figure out when you actually USE a car you build!Click on NEXT  for more information and   photos!

One of our own, dressed to kill with enough power to do it quickly. A supercharged, stroker C5R race block built up by Doug Rippie Motorsports resides within our custom engine compartment surrounds. The sound makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck, and those huge 335/30ZR18 Toyo R888 track day tires don’t stand a chance when you’re anywhere near full throttle in lower gears.[Via:musclevehicles.com]

The Detroit Speed and Engineering catalog was thrown at the car, with their fabricated subframe up front a four link out back. Mini tubs hold the extra rubber. Corvette C6 Z06 brakes lurk behind custom Boyd Coddington black V-Twin wheels. Fat sway bars and killer coil overs maintain a level stance no matter the curve.Click on NEXT  for more information and   photos!

Outside, we’ve shaved the door handles and wipers, and we’ve selectively blacked out trim. All new glass is in place, and of course all of the chrome is perfect. You’ll see the custom exhaust outlets poking out from the rocker panels–we custom fabbed those, too.[Via:musclevehicles.com]

Inside you’re enveloped in materials beyond those found in any production Chevrolet, ever. Attitude rises from the faux ostrich pattern on the doors and dash, as well as the bright red seat and door panel inserts. We went with a Covan dash holding a full array of gauges, a classic chrome stick connected to the five speed below and billet touches as we saw fit. It’s buttoned down and bad ass all at the same time.

1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Convertible

Installed both front shocks (Koni Classic,) air cleaner mounting hardware, air filter, oil pressure sending unit boot, date-coded spark plug wires, one horn (was missing,) radiator fan shroud, transmission pan gasket, the entire exhaust system from the manifolds to the tips, sway bar bracket bushings, power steering hoses, rebuilt power steering “ram,” fuel cap emblem, both power top hydraulic cylinders, both front window cranks, emergency flasher button, driver side vent cable, washer fluid floor pad and the battery.  Tidied up some wiring, made sure all of the lights worked inside and out, and gave the car the once-over.  Being an old car, some of those items are forgivable, but this car must exceed expectations.

image 1968-ford-mustang-shelby-gt500-convertible-_159_001.jpg

When you think of significant muscle cars there are a few cars and names which come to mind. At the top of nearly every list you’ll find one ornery Texan, Carroll Shelby, and his fantastic reinterpretation of Ford’s Mustang. More desirable yet are the convertibles and the big block cars, and this gorgeous Sunlit Gold example here is both. Highly documented, a 25+ year SAAC member car and owned by the same man who took delivery for more than 30 years this show ready example is perfect for any high end collection.

image 1968-ford-mustang-shelby-gt500-convertible-_159_002.jpg

The big three pieces of documentation follow this car: The ORGINAL build sheet, the Marti Report and a copy of the original invoice. Here’s how this car left Metuchen on March 5th, 1968:

428CI Police Interceptor V8

C6 Automatic Transmission

Exterior paint: Sunlit Gold

interior: Black Décor Bucket Seats

White Power Convertible Top w/Glass Rear Window

Visibility Group (light package)

Wheel Lip Moldings

Power Front Disc Brakes

Tilt Steering Wheel

Air Conditioning

AM Radio

Interior Décor Group

Tinted Glass

Tachometer and Trip Odometer

When Shelby got done with it there were a pile of changes from the specific bodywork to the rollover bar to the Goodyear Speedway tires to the Stewart Warner “green line” gauges in the center stack. Completed, it went to Pletcher Ford Sales in Jenkintown, PA, where it was picked up on July 22, 1968 by its new owner, James W. Sole.

image 1968-ford-mustang-shelby-gt500-convertible-_159_014.jpg

The build sheet, the copy of the invoice, the original tax form from 1968, receipts for various services throughout the years, the brochures and ads for the car, previous registrations and damn near every SAAC dash plaque and member card he owned are kept. There’s even an autograph from Carroll himself!

image 1968-ford-mustang-shelby-gt500-convertible-_159_007.jpg

You like to see long-term ownership of a car – it means it was something special to the person behind the wheel and not just a toy. Mr. Sole loved the car, and wherever his job took him the Shelby followed. It spent time in Philly, Rochester, NY, Westport, CT, and Palos Verdes, CA before winding up in Rockport, MA. If you’d believe it Jim used the car for his daily transportation through 1989! He retired the car to weekend duty and had the car restored in the next couple of years by specialist Mike White in Bow, Mass. Finished in time for the 1993 show season it took Best Restored Antique at the 1993 Boston World of Wheels show against a ton of competition. Shunning a trailer even after the significant restoration he drove it to the 18th annual Shelby American Auto Club meet and took home silver in class – the highest score handed out for a driven car at the meet. The biggest point deductions? Jim installed a set of Koni shocks and reinstalled the 10 spoke alloy wheels he bought from Shelby in 1981–two big no-no’s in a structured event like that. Out of the 19 points deducted a whopping 13 of them were for the shocks and rolling stock! Suffice to say Mike’s talents and Jim’s dedication produced a gold level vehicle!

image 1968-ford-mustang-shelby-gt500-convertible-_159_018.jpg

Desirable doesn’t always mean rare, and rare doesn’t always mean desirable, but this car is a rare case where both are true. One of only 402 GT500 convertibles produced in 1968, one of 249 with the 428/C6 combo and one of only 82 convertibles (both 350 and 500) in Gold over black. Not as racy as red, not as menacing as black this classic gold beauty speaks to a more refined palette, and is a tough one to find! 1968 Chevrolet Camaro C5R

Saturday, April 6, 2013

We all know the Shelby Mustang dubbed ‘Eleanor’ from the movie ‘Gone In Sixty Seconds’ was a coupe but what if you could go topless.  That simple idea took one man over 700 hours to complete as he custom built a 1968 Mustang convertible with a removable hardtop.  With the project finished and looking amazing the owner decided to put the Mustang up for auction on eBay at No Reserve.

The 1968 Mustang features a 302 ci V8 engine with 351C heads and a Holly double pumper 700 carb that is pumping out around 330 horsepower but the engine is just a small part of what this vehicle is all about.  What makes this vehicle unique is the matching hard top that mounts over the convertible top.  Its truly a unique feature rarely seen which sets this Eleanor clone apart from the rest.

As of writing this the auction has received 50 bids with the high bidder at $35,100.

1968 SHELBY MUSTANG GT500 MATCHING NUMBERS

The trim is also show quality throughout, from the S H E L B Y block letters on the hood and deck to the polished stainless steel rocker and windshield moldings. Speaking of the windshield, it’s a correct Carlite “Sunvisor” piece with the markings in the center. The bumpers are fresh chrome, the grille surround is perfect, the hood pins are correct, and the argent silver tail panel is as-new. The trick sequential taillights are fully functional, too!

Under the hood, you’ll find a highly detailed S-code 428 cubic inch V8 painted the correct shade of Ford Blue and topped by a single 4-barrel carburetor. Factory rated at 355 horsepower, everyone pretty much acknowledges that these motors crank out substantially more than that. This one has been fully rebuilt to stock specs, then fully dressed for show duty at the highest levels. The original thermactor emissions control system is intact and functional, the hoses and clamps are correct, and there is a new Autolite battery in its tray. The original Shelby data tag is still affixed to the inner fender. This car is also loaded with luxury features like power steering and power disc brakes, as well as the Extra Cooling Package whose radiator has been restored to new condition up front. Engine bays simply do not get any nicer—this one is proverbially “eat off of it” immaculate.

1968 OLDSMOBILE 442

Say hello to the 442 a beautiful and very fast car that is still very desired to this day. The 442 was producing around 350 horsepower with the option of the RAM air which gave t another 10 horsepower. This style Oldsmobile would continue to produce until 1971. I love the muscle cars with this body style, aggressive and fast, waiting for the next in line.
