For 58 of its 60 years, the Chevrolet Corvette has been powered by the legendary Chevrolet V-8 engine. Technological advancements have increased output threefold – from 195 hp in 1955 to 638 hp today – as well as reliability, refinement and efficiency.


However, the fundamental architecture of the Chevrolet “Small Block” remains the same today as it was in 1955: a 90-degree V-8, with overhead valves actuated by pushrods, and a 4.4-inch on-center bore spacing.


“The brilliance of the Chevrolet V-8 is its elegant, efficient design,” said Jordan Lee, global chief engineer for Small Block Engines. “The Chevy V-8 has fewer reciprocating parts, and is very efficient and has one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any engine family in the industry. The design is incredibly compact, enabling the Corvette’s signature sleek profile and low hood line.”


Despite a sporty appearance, the early Corvettes’ performance didn’t match their good looks. The car launched in 1953 with the “Blue Flame” inline six-cylinder engine and a two-speed automatic transmission – not exactly the stuff on which to build a sports car legend. That changed in 1955, when the new small-block V-8 engine became available and was ordered by 99 percent of Corvette buyers.Read more!


Not only did the new and significantly more powerful engine breathe new life into the Corvette’s driving experience, it could be linked to a three-speed manual transmission that gave the driver an even greater connection to the car. The result made the Corvette a proper sports car, and enthusiasts responded. Sales nearly doubled from 1954 and by the end of the decade, they nearly tripled.


Immediately after the V-8 was introduced, the small-block began a steady march upward in displacement, power and technological advancement.


The Corvette’s first 4.3L (265 cu. in.) small-block engine in 1955 produced up to 195 hp with an optional four-barrel carburetor. Today, the LS9 6.2L (376 cu. in.) supercharged small-block in the Corvette ZR1 is rated at 638 hp (476 kW), delivering about 230 percent more power than the original small-block engine from only 42 percent greater displacement.

Today’s small-block is also remarkably fuel efficient. For example, the 430-horsepower (476 kW) LS3 version of the Gen-IV small-block helps the 2013 Corvette accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about four seconds, run the quarter-mile in just more than 12 seconds and achieve a top speed of 190 mph – all while achieving EPA-estimated highway fuel economy of 26 mpg.


That fuel economy compares favorably to vehicles more commonly associated with daycare drop-off vehicles than road-course lap times. Indeed, the Corvette’s highway fuel economy is better than the 2013 Hyundai Equus (23 mpg), Volvo XC90 AWD (23 mpg) or Subaru Legacy with the 3.6L flat-6 (25 mpg) – and it matches the Toyota Venza (26 mpg). It also matches or beats other sports cars with smaller engines, including the Nissan 370Z (26 mpg/3.7L V-6), Porsche 911 Turbo (24 mpg/3.8L flat-6) and BMW Z4 (26 mpg/3.0L straight-6).


Here is a look as some of the most significant small-block engines in Corvette’s history:


1957 283 “Fuelie” – Almost 30 years before the widespread adoption of fuel injection, the Corvette offered it on the newly enlarged 283-cubic-inch small-block, resulting in 283 horsepower – and the one-horsepower-per-cubic-inch benchmark that is still considered a noteworthy performance achievement for modern engines.


1969 350 – The small-block’s displacement grew throughout the Fifties and Sixties, but when it settled at the 350-cubic-inch mark in 1969, an icon was born. Many enthusiasts equate the small-block with the classic 350, which remained the Corvette’s standard engine through 1996.


1985 “L98” Tuned Port Injection – Although electronically controlled fuel injection was introduced on the Corvette in 1981 (the early “Fuelie” engine featured mechanical fuel injection), it was the 1985 introduction of the L98-code engine and its Tuned Port Injection system that launched the modern era of performance. Its basic port-injection design is used on the 2013 Corvette and almost every other gas-powered vehicle sold in America.

1997 LS1 – The third generation of the small-block debuted in the C5 Corvette. Completely redesigned, it introduced a new aluminum “deep skirt” cylinder block, high-flow aluminum cylinder heads and more – all while retaining the basic 4.4-inch bore-center design of the original small block.


2006 LS7 – Co-developed with the C6.R racing program, it is the highest-performance naturally aspirated production small-block in Corvette history, rated at 505 hp, with a 7,000-rpm redline. It was introduced in the C6 Corvette Z06 and is also included with the 2013 427 Convertible Collector Edition. It is hand-built at GM’s Performance Build Center near Detroit.


2009 LS9 Supercharged – It’s the most powerful automotive production engine ever from Chevrolet and its 638 supercharged horses help push the Corvette ZR1 to a top speed of 205 mph. Like the LS7 engine, it is built by hand at the Performance Build Center.

1969 Berger Corvette 427 VERY RARE

This 1969 Berger Corvette 427 is VERY RARE 1 OF 2 only made. You are looking at a very rare piece of automotive history.  This Corvette was produced by Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  It is one of only two corvettes Berger produced.  They are well known for their Camaro’s and to this day are still offering their power pack options which cost between $40,000 and $60,000 for their modifications.  Unlike many high performance chevy dealers Berger is still family owned and still in existence today (unlike Yanko and many others).

This corvette has a 427 tri-power which started as a 400 horse car and as far as we know, they modified to at least 450 horse.  It is a very high option car, it has both tops.  It also has the original build sheet and window sticker. Via: musclevehicles.com



The only option that was changed on the car is the deluxe wheels that is on the tank sticker to the rally wheels which I think most would agree look better on the car.

We are not sure if Berger changed them or a past owner did.  The car also has power windows, power brakes, power steering, tilt and tele, head restraints, custom shoulder belts, pozi traction, 331 ratio rear, turbo 400 transmission (if you research Berger and their are many articles on the internet including one from AutoTrader that gives the full history of Berger Chev you will find out that the turbo 400 was their trans of choice). Via: musclevehicles.com



The car also has tinted glass, red striped tires, front fender louver trim, F41 suspension and speed warning indicator.  The car is in amazing condition as you can see from the pictures.

This car was inspected by an NCRS judge when the owner first purchased it.  It became a subject on the super car registry and he was asked if he would allow them to send one of their top judges down to authenticate the car and they could find no issue that this was not the real deal.  To the corvette purist this is probably not a car for you.  But, for the rest of the car collector community, this is a piece of automotive history. The Ford Mustang is an automobile manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. It was initially based on the platform of the second generation North American Ford Falcon, a compact car. Introduced early on April 17, 1964, and thus dubbed as a “1964½” model by Mustang fans, the 1965 Mustang was the automaker’s most successful launch since the Model A. The Mustang has undergone several transformations to its current fifth generation.






As Lee Iacocca’s assistant general manager and chief engineer, Donald N. Frey was the head engineer for the T-5 project—supervising the overall development of the car in a record 18 months—while Iacocca himself championed the project as Ford Division general manager. The T-5 prototype was a two-seat, mid-mounted engine roadster. This vehicle employed the German Ford Taunus V4 engine and was very similar in appearance to the much later Pontiac Fiero.

It was claimed that the decision to abandon the two-seat design was in part due to the low sales experienced with the 2-seat 1955 Thunderbird. To broaden market appeal it was later remodeled as a four-seat car (with full space for the front bucket seats, as originally planned, and a rear bench seat with significantly less space than was common at the time). A “Fastback 2+2″ model traded the conventional trunk space for increased interior volume as well as giving exterior lines similar to those of the second series of the Corvette Sting Ray and European sports cars such as the Jaguar E-Type. The “Fastback 2+2″ was not available as a 1964½ model, but was first manufactured on August 17, 1964.




All of the features added to the “1965″ model were available as options or developmental modification to the “1964½” model, which in some cases led to “mix-and-match” confusion as surprised Ford execs hurriedly ramped up production by taking over lines originally intended for other car models’ 1965 years. Some cars with 289 engines which were not given the chrome fender badges denoting the larger engine, and more than one car left the plant with cutouts for back-up lights but no lights nor the later wiring harness needed to operate them. While these would today be additional-value collectors’ items, most of these oddities were corrected at the dealer level, sometimes only after buyers had noticed them. The 1966 model was basically unchanged, but featured revised side scoops, grill and gas cap, as well as the deletion of the four bars protruding from the Mustang emblem in the grille. The Falcon-based instrument cluster was replaced with a sportier unit designed specially for the Mustang.

Starting in 1969, to aid sales and continue the winning formula of the Mustang, a variety of new performance and decorative options became available, including functional (and non-functional) air scoops, cable and pin hood tie downs, and both wing and chin spoilers. Additionally, a variety of performance packages were introduced to appeal to a wider audience, notably the Mach 1, the Boss 302 and Boss 429. The two Boss models were introduced to homologate the engines for racing but received fame on the street and to this day they still demand premium pricing for their pedigree. 1969 was the last year for the GT option. However, a fourth model available only as a hardtop, the Grande, (pronounced ‘grund-ai’) met a degree of success starting in 1969 with its soft ride, “luxurious” trim, 55 pounds (24.9 kg) of extra sound deadening, and simulated wood trim.

  • Engine: Phil rebuilt the Fish’s 340, adding an Edelbrock LD 340 intake, tti headers and Dynomax mufflers, and Mopar Performance electronic ignition, a hydraulic camshaft and valve springs, while keeping the OEM heads, forged steel crankshaft and Carter AVS four barrel.

  • Transmission: Original-equipment 23-spline 833 four-speed and Hurst shifter. They got this one right the first time.

  • Rearend: OEM here, too–8-3/4 rear end with 3.91 gears

  • Suspension: Restored original for this ’69 ‘Cuda 340: Heavy-duty longitudinal torsion bars, anti-sway bar and HD tubular shocks up front, with leaf springs and HD tubular shocks in back.

  • Body: Restored original ’69 Barracuda fastback unibody wears all its original sheetmetal, scoops and chrome trim, but Phil left off the black-only A56 ‘Cuda 340 stripes this time around.

  • Paint: Mickey Beal of Millstone, New Jersey, sprayed on the single stage X9 Black acrylic enamel.

  • Interior: The visors and headliner are original, but Legendary’s reprodustion Saddle Tan vinyl trim covers the seats, door and side panels. Ssnake Oyl restored the OEM front and rear seat belts.

Children of the 1980s have the year 2015 marked on our calendars. The reason for this is because the movie Back To the Future II told us we would have flying cars and hover boards by 2015. There are still two years left to mass produce. If an apocalypse can theoretically occur in a day, then we can still hold out hope for 2015. Every year, car manufacturers unveil their latest ideas into what are known as ‘concept cars.’ These concept cars often will not be mass produced, but we are still holding out a bit of hope that one days these beauties could be on the streets. We also want to reach our sky garages by jet packs as long as we are at it.


10. Autobianchi Runabout Bertone (1969)

At the Turin Motor Show in 1969, the Autobianchi Runabout Bertone made its debut. This car was the closest thing that you would probably ever see to actually owning Speed Racer’s Mark 5. If the future depicted in the Waschowski’s movie was to become a reality, then the Runabout Bertone model should be massed produced by now. The Runabout Bertone was not even inspired by the automobile world. The basic concept behind this car was to put a speed motorboat on wheels. Now, just imagine if the wheels were actually retractable and the Runabout was either a convertible motorboat or submarine. The dropped ball on the Runabout could have given us to James Bond or Condorman action.


9. Italdesign Machimoto (1986)


The Machimoto (1986) was an attempt at the evolution of the Dune Buggy. It was essentially a bridge between open air dirt riding and Total Recall. Basically, a combination with Volkswagon engineers to try and combine the stability of a car with the open air enjoyment of riding a motorcycle. The Machimoto was designed to comfortably seat nine. The Machimoto looks more at home riding a rail ala The Black Hole or being a street worthy roller coaster car. It sports a sleek boxy open air look that we were supposed to fall in love with here in the future. Unfortunately, we are as far away now from the Machimoto as we are from having everyday silver or gold pants.

8. Chevy Astro III (1969)


The Chevy Astro III came out during a time in which the Moon Shot was influencing everything. The question today becomes “Why aren’t we driving around miniature spaceships on freeways… right now?” It certainly seemed like a possibility in 1969. A little imagination and this baby would have been your driving X-Wing fighter today. One of the truly great innovations of the Astro III were the rear view mirrors. Do you not see them on the car? That is exactly the point. The rear view mirrors were actually small closed circuit televisions in the interior that would broadcast what was going on around the car. If the closed circuit television idea had come to fruition for everything, all we would lose is one ‘objects in mirror’ joke in Jurassic Park as well as a single Meat Loaf song. We would have lived.

7. Ford FX-Atmos (1954)


The Ford FX-Atmos debuted at the Chicago auto show in 1954. This seeming proto Batmobile used the term FX ( for Future Experimental ) and seems like it would be more comfortable riding the airways on Coruscant than any where near the freeway system. The Atmos name was a nod to the idea that cars could one bay be run by nuclear reactors. To this day, we do not drive anything that looks quite as futuristic as the Atmos. You can only imagine that crowd’s disappointment if they saw a twenty first century KIA Optima. A degraded nuclear core was a central plot point in The Dark Knight Rises that might eliminate millions of people. Just imagine the wholesale destruction some schmuck could cause by changing out one on his modern day Atmos.

6. Bertone BAT 5 (1953)


Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnica 5 was an attempt to make the lightest most aerodynamic car possible. The Bertone BAT 5 eliminate weight as well as wind resistance as much as possible. There was even an attempt to eliminate wind resistance in turning wheels. The result? This is a car out of your futuristic wet dreams lighter than most cars on the road right now. Also, the BAT 5 could easily top 200 mph. If we had gone down the road of the BAT 5, the muscle car era would have turned into the steroid muscle car era. Literally, the idea behind the Bertone BAT 5 was to have a mini jet cruising down the highway. If that was going to be the regular cars, just imagine what the cop cars to stop them would have had to look like.

5. GM Firebird II (1956)



The Firebird II is the only car ever constructed out of titanium. We don’t think that you are quite taking the journey with us here. Titanium is the same material in which Stewie Griffin talks about making death rays from and Iron Man villains construct their armor from. The Firebird II looks like a combination of a shark and a pod racer. The amazing part is that the Firebird II was an imagination of the futuristic family roadster. This car would have probably taken the run time of National Lampoon’s Vacation down to around four minutes. That is probably a bit of hyperbole but Clark Griswold would have had no trouble keeping up with Christie Brinkley in and updated version of this baby.


4. Ford Nucleon (1958)


Believe it or not, there was a time in which nuclear energy was seen as a source of power for every day use. The vision was that nuclear energy would provide a clean cost efficient alternative to all other types of fuel. Just imagine, you could power your car, talk on your phone, and scold the kids with all three of your arms! During this time of unfettered and possibly ignorant optimism, there was the scale model produced of the Ford Nucleon. The Nucleon imagined a future in which cars would run on the same concept as nuclear submarines. There would be nuclear powering stations on every corner. Somewhere, Mr. Burns would put his fingers together and say ‘Excellent.’ There was never a working proto type but the Nucleon gave us a glimpse of what might have and what might still be.

3. Chrysler Turbine Car (1962-1964)


Have you ever sat down and pondered what would happen if they actually put a jet engine into a car? Well, take heart Bucky, you are not alone. Chrysler spent about three decades pondering whether your car could style around like it was straight out of Men In Black. The Chrysler Turbine car could run on your choice of diesel fuel, unleaded gasoline, jet fuel, or vegetable oil. The findings on whether or not it would also slice and fry potatoes are a little more vague. Unfortunately, you cannot even buy these things on the black market as most of them were destroyed by Chrysler or donated to museums. There are only three fully functional Chrysler Turbine Cars out of 54 produced. The technology was later used in the M1 Abrams Battle Tank. The possibilities were endless… and awesome.

2. Ford Gyron ( 1961 )


In the recent Men In Black III, Will Smith’s J character said that “two wheels is like my minimum.” It stands to reason that J would have loved (or at least tolerated) the Ford Gyron. The Gyron was a two wheeled fully encapsulated car that looked more like a TRON light cycle than anything currently on the road. At auction, a mere model of the Gyron sold for forty thousand dollars. The Gyron operated on a series of gyroscopes to operate the hybrid car/motorcycle. For being envisioned over fifty years ago, the Gyron still looks like it could be the future of automobile travel.

1. Lincoln Futura ( 1955 )


The Lincoln Futura is still embedded in our collective imagination not for what the Futura was but for what the Futura would become. The Futura was originally produced at a cost of a quarter of a million dollars in the 1950’s tio highlight potential advancement in car design. Ten years later, the Futura was repainted and turned into the infamous Batmobile for the Adam West television series. Years later, the Dark Knight trilogy Batmobile would be postulated to come out of Wayne Enterprises Research and Development department. Of course, the Futura was never actually mass produced but everyone certainly wanted one.

America loves speed. The 1960s and 1970s might have produced the wildest and rarest muscle cars packing giant torque-rich V-8s, but the 1980s brought its share of powerful machines to the street, too—cars that were quick and met the more stringent emissions controls. And behind the horsepower there are some surprising stories


10. 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500


The first two years of Carroll Shelby’s Mustangs are the most desirable to many Mustang purists. Those 1965 and 1966 GT 350s were light, simply styled, and perfect for track work. But the later 1967 and 1968 cars offered more fun under the hood and were the machines of choice if you wanted to win drag races.For the first time, ’67 to ’68 GT 500 Shelbys came with 355-hp 428-cubic-inch big-block power under the hood. Car testers of the day saw quarter-mile time slips in the mid-to-low 14-second bracket—quick for the day. The Shelby Mustangs received more scoops and flashier styling than the older cars to match the new-found power and torque. And the even quicker KR (King of the Road) high-performance model was available in 1968 too.

Little-Known Fact: The 1967 Shelby Mustangs used Mercury Cougar tail lamps, but the 1968 models used lamps from the ’66 Ford Thunderbird.




9. 1984 Chevy Corvette


The third generation of America’s sports car, the Corvette, had an incredibly long run: 1968 to 1982. So when it came time for GM to launch the next-generation C4 Corvette, there was wild speculation about the car. Some predicted it would use a midengine chassis, like an Italian exotic. And others thought it might use a rotary engine, like Mazda’s.In the end, the next Vette wasn’t radical. It still had a small-block Chevy V-8 up front driving the rear wheels. That first year, it cranked out a meager 205 hp. But after a switch to a new, tuned port fuel-injection system in later years, horsepower jumped—and so did performance. Five years later, Chevy debuted the first ultra-performance Vette since the 1960s: the 375-hp ZR-1.

Little-Known Fact: There is no production 1983 Corvette. Although 1982 was the last year for the third-generation Corvette, Chevy decided to wait until the 1984 model year to launch the all-new car. Why? Some sources claim tighter emissions regulations necessitated more time for development. Others say that quality glitches at the factory were the real reason. All we know is every 1983 Corvette prototype was destroyed, except one: a white car that now lives at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky.





8. 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona


The 1969 Dodge Daytona and its sibling, the 1970 Plymouth Superbird, are arguably the most radical vehicles to emerge from the muscle car wars. But the Daytona, as the name might suggest, wasn’t designed for street racing. It was built to win Nascar races on the superspeedways—the longest and fastest tracks.To increase top speed, engineers took the Charger to the wind tunnel. The aerodynamic modifications to the big Dodge included a nearly 2-foot-tall rear wing, a flush rear window, and a longer, sloped nose cone. The results were impressive. The race version of the Daytona became the first car in Nascar history to break 200 mph. After numerous Dodge wins in 1969 and some by Plymouth in 1970, Nascar’s new rule book banned these cars. The production cars, which came packing a 440 big-block or the legendary 426 Hemi, are sought-after collector cars today that bring more than $150,000 at auctions.

Little-Known Fact: The Daytona’s aerodynamic modifications over a those of a standard Charger helped lower the coefficient of drag to 0.28—an excellent figure even by today’s standards. But did that huge rear wing really need to be so tall to maximize rear-end downforce? According to legend, no. The reason for the exaggerated height of the wing was so that the trunklid on the production cars could pass underneath it and fully open.





7. 1970 Oldsmobile 442


The 442 (which gets its name from its four-barrel carburetor, four-speed manual, and dual exhausts) was based on the Cutlass and become the hot muscle machine for the Oldsmobile division. It shared its platform with two other hot GM machines, the Chevy Chevelle SS and the Pontiac GTO. And like the GTO, the 442 was only a trim level at the beginning. But by 1970, you could get a huge 455-cubic-inch big-block V-8. And when equipped with the even more potent W30 parts, the motor made 360 hp and a whopping 500 lb-ft of torque. It could hit 60 mph in less than 6 seconds, which was very quick for the time—especially for an Olds.Little-Known Fact: Actor James Garner raced a beefed-up 1970 Olds 442 in the NORRA Mexico 1000 (a precursor to the Baja 1000), where it won second in class. The Goodyear Grabber, as it was known, was built by legendary Baja-race-vehicle guru Vic Hickey and sponsored by Goodyear tires. The vehicle was recently restored and put up for sale.


6. 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am


By the late 1970s, muscle car performance was a mere shadow of what it had been years earlier. The latest emissions controls, combined with high gas prices and stratospheric insurance costs, caused most automakers to severely dial back horsepower.But not Pontiac. The Trans-Am had been riding a new wave of popularity since its starring role in the movie Smokey and the Bandit. For the 1978 model year, Pontiac added to the excitement by actually increasing the horsepower of its top-level Trans Am from 200 to 220. The brand also developed a special handling package called the WS6 that added a sport-tuned suspension, wider 8-inch wheels, new tires, and quicker steering. The result was a Pontiac Trans-Am that was actually quicker and handled better around a track than the Chevy Corvette.

Little-Known Fact: The Pontiac’s T-top roof, which first became an option in 1976, was as close as a buyer could get to a convertible Trans Am. These lift-out roof sections were initially made by Hurst and were known as the Hurst Hatch. The problem was, they leaked. This led Pontiac to develop its own T-tops within GM’s Fisher body division and launch the option midway through the 1978 model year. So some ’78 Firebirds have Hurst T-tops and others have the Fisher units. You can spot the difference because the Fisher glass roof panels are larger than the Hurst Hatch ones.





5. 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429


In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Nascar was in its golden age. Automakers took the business of stock-car racing seriously and would dream up engines and bodywork for racing that were often too wild for the street. All the automakers needed to do was sell 500 of these radical cars and they could run them in Nascar.The Boss 429 Mustang was just such a beast. Although the Mustang didn’t compete in Nascar, the 375-hp 429-cubic-inch V-8 under its hood was designed specifically for racing and built to rev to 6000 rpm. The problem was, this motor did not perform well on the street. It was slower than the other big-block Mustangs at the time. The Nascar-bound V-8 was monstrously large and did not fit in a stock Mustang’s engine bay. So Ford contracted Kar Kraft in Brighten, Mich., to handle the job. The company relocated the shock towers, widened the track of the front end using unique componentry, relocated the battery to the trunk, and fitted a smaller brake booster—all to make room for this beastly powerplant to fit in the Mustang. Today, the rarity and mystique behind the Boss 429 has pushed values at auction well beyond $200,000.

Little-Known Fact: There were actually three different 429 engines installed in the Boss 429 between ’69 and ’70. The ⋆ “S-Code” was installed in early cars and filled with race-duty parts. But the S-Code had warranty problems, reportedly because of an incorrect assembly process. So the “T-Code” with lighter-duty parts was used in some cars. The later “A-Code” version of the 429, equipped with smog equipment and a new valvetrain, appeared toward the end of production.




4. 1970 Chevy Chevelle LS6


When GM relaxed its longstanding rule forbidding engines larger than 400 cubic inches to be installed in midsize cars, it set off a muscle frenzy across the company’s divisions. Oldsmobile put the huge 455-cubic-inch into its 442, and Chevy installed a unique 454-cubic-inch V-8, the LS6, into its Chevelle SS.A conservative estimate of the LS6′s power puts it at 450 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. But thanks to its high 11.25:1 compression ratio and giant Holley 780 CFM carb, the LS6′s real output in the Chevelle SS was closer to 500 hp, many experts claim. Our pals at Car and Driver tested one in 1970 and found it hit 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds, running through the quarter-mile in 13.8 seconds. And that was with the skinny low-grip tires of the day; that same car with modern rubber would be much quicker. The LS6 carries the highest factory horsepower rating of all muscle cars.

Little-Known Fact: The Chevrolet Corvette has always been Chevy’s top performance car. And up until the LS6, GM wouldn’t allow any other Chevy to carry a horsepower rating higher than that of the Corvette. But somehow that stance was relaxed for 1970—the highest horsepower engine you could get in a 1970 Corvette was a 390-hp LS5 454. An LS7 was planned with 465 hp, but it was never officially sold. So why no LS6? An LS6 Corvette was offered for 1971, but its potency slipped (at least officially) to 425 hp.





3. 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge


Pontiac owned the muscle scene in the early 1960s. In fact, the 1964 Pontiac GTO is widely regarded as the very first of the breed. But by 1968, that car had plenty of competition. The thought within Pontiac was to make a cheaper version of the GTO with a smaller 350-cubic-inch engine called the ET (for “elapsed time”) a drag-racing term.Pontiac boss John DeLorean didn’t like that idea. To him, no GTO ould have an engine that small. Instead, the team built a car one step up from the regular GTO. DeLorean himself named the car after a popular skit on the TV show Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In. The Judge featured the 360-hp Ram Air III engine standard, but buyers could also opt for the more ⋆ 370-hp Ram Air IV. The rarest of all were the GTO Judge Ram Air IV convertibles—only five were built in 1969.

Little-Known Fact: The original TV commercial for the Judge featured the rock band Paul Revere and the Raiders singing about the GTO out on a dry lakebed. According to the book Pontiac Pizazz, by Jim Wangers and Art Fitzpatrick, the lead singer, Mark Lindsay, was a car guy and loved the Judge, so he wrote a song about it. Wangers claims this commercial is considered one of the earliest rock-music videos.




2. 1969 COPO Camaro


Chevrolet’s Central Office Production Order (COPO) system was designed for fleet sales; it was intended to spec out heavy-duty suspensions for cop cars and stain-proof interiors for taxicabs. But enterprising dealers with the right connections, such as Yenko Chevrolet in Pennsylvania, figured out that Camaros could be ordered this way, too. And given the right order codes, the dealer could spec out a fire-breathing monster of a Camaro that Chevy didn’t really want you to own.The production order 9561 specified a 427 big-block V-8 rated at 425 hp—just like a Vette. But the even rarer COPO 9560 called for an all-aluminum ZL-1 427 V-8. Though this engine was rated with just 5 more hp, it was widely known that this race-spec engine delivered more like 550 hp. Only 69 ZL-1 Camaros were built, and these cars command prices in the $400,000 range at an auction

Little-Known Fact: The aluminum ZL-1 427 V-8 in the 9560 COPO Camaro is essentially a race engine. Chevy originally developed this 427 motor for the Chaparral racing team to use in the Can Am series. There are no external emblems on a ZL-1 Camaro that let you know what’s under the hood—only plain-vanilla Camaro badges.




1. 1987 Buick GNX


Long after the big block V-8-powered muscle cars of the 1960s and 1970s went, Buick brought back some of that magic in the 1980s. The Buick GNX, based on the Grand National (which is itself a hot-rod version of the Regal coupe), was equipped with a potent, turbocharged V-6. The GNX package brought the Grand National’s horsepower from 245 up to 276.Car and Driver tested one in 1987 and recorded a 0-to-60-mph time of just 4.6 seconds, making it one of the quickest cars on the market. Buick made only 547 of these black beasts. Many were squirreled away into storage as investments.Little-Known Fact: Buick had quite a few of these engines left over when it stopped production of the GNX—so Pontiac picked up the turbo V-6s and put them in the 1989 20th Anniversary Trans Am. It was conservatively rated at just 250 hp, but true GM enthusiasts knew the potential that lay under the hood of that Trans Am.

The complete rotating assembly has been balanced. The motor uses Comp Cams 650/650 roller, 4340 Steel crank, polished aluminum heads, Manley Stainless Steel Valves, Comp Cam Springs, ten degree Chromoly Retainers and locks, Jomar stud girdles, and Chromoly pushrods. The Camaro has dual Holley 750 Blower Carbs, Malory ignition and a 671 supercharger. The motor was fully set up, synchronized and dynoed.

1969 Shelby GT500 Barn Find

The ’69 GT500 you see here is being sold by the original owner with a mere 62,000 miles on the clock.  After being purchased new, the Shelby was driven until the 80′s when it began to have some minor issues.  The car has been stored in a garage since, untouched.
