#12 No margarine

In the state of Wisconsin, it’s illegal to serve butter substitutes in state prisons. It’s actually healthier to have butter anyway, so our guess is the state legislators are watching out for their inmates?

#11 DUI down

If you desperately must have personalized license plates, then don’t get slapped with a DUI in New Jersey… or just don’t drink and drive OR live in the state of New Jersey. The law there states that once you have been convicted of drunk driving, you may never again have personalized plates!

#10 Take down the trimmings

Unfortunately, Maine as a state does not tolerate Christmas lights and wreaths past January 14th. It is illegal in Maine to have your Christmas decorations up past that date!

#9 Bingo time

In North Carolina, grandma isn’t allowed to play bingo for more than five hours. No marathon in this state!

#8 Watch out!

We’re not sure what kind of murderer would have the foresight to wear a bulletproof vest while committing his or her crime, but in the state of New Jersey, it’s actually illegal to wear one when committing murder!

#7 Party of…

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. Maybe that’s because you’re not allowed to buy drinks for more than three people at a time. Yes, it’s true — that’s an actual Nevada law!

#6 Three little bears

In Alaska, hunting is a regular thing. Shooting bears is a regular thing. And it’s totally ok for you to wake a bear up by shooting it (if you sorta miss). However, it’s illegal in Alaska to wake a sleeping bear merely to take a picture of or with it!

#5 No German fare

Beer and pretzels… that sure sounds like our kind of sports bar game night appetizer! Too bad we’ll never visit North Dakota for this reason. It’s illegal there for a restaurant to serve both pretzels and beer at the same time!

#4 Arcade age

Do you think there’s too much violence in video games for kids under the age of 18? Are you concerned that arcades are a bad influence? Well, there’s a place for you — South Carolina deems it illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to play a pinball machine.

#3 No bear hug

In the state of Missouri, it is illegal to drive with an uncaged bear. We’re assuming that this means it’s ok to transport bears from zoo to zoo as long as they’re in cages, but there’s no random cab hopping for your friendly backyard guest!

#2 Heavy hearts

In the state of Idaho, it’s illegal for a man to give his love a box of candy weighing more than 50 pounds. So we guess there’s no chance our lover in Idaho’s gonna be sending us that fantasy jumbo Toblerone gift basket.

#1 Drunk fish

In the state of Ohio, it’s illegal to get a fish drunk. We’re not sure why you would want to in the first place, but there it is!

Relationship

When Bill and Hillary first got married Bill said, “I am putting a box under the bed. You must promise never to look in it.”relationships

In all their 30 years of marriage, Hillary never looked. On the afternoon of their 30th anniversary, curiosity got the best of her and she lifted the lid and peeked inside. In the box were 3 empty beer cans and $81,874.25 in cash.

She closed the box and put it back under the bed. Now that she knew what was in the box, she was doubly curious as to why there even was such a box with such contents. That evening, they were out for a special anniversary dinner.

After dinner, Hillary could no longer contain her curiosity and she confessed, saying, “I am so sorry, Bill. For all these years, I kept my promise and never looked into the box under our bed. However, today the temptation was too much and I gave in. But now I need to know, why do you keep the 3 beer cans in the box?”

Bill thought for a while and said, “I guess after all these years you deserve to know the truth. Whenever I was unfaithful to you, I put an empty beer can in the box under the bed to remind myself not to do it again.”

Hillary was shocked, but said, “Hmmm, Jennifer, Paula and Monica. I am very disappointed and saddened by your behavior. However, since you are addicted to s*x I guess it does happen and I guess 3 times is not that bad considering your problem.”

Bill thanked her for being so understanding. They hugged and made their peace. A little while later Hillary asked Bill, “So why do you have all that money in the box?”

Bill answered: “Well, whenever the box filled up with empty cans, I took them to the recycling center and redeemed them for cash.”

Dignified space monkey

As part of what Iran states is a step toward launching its own manned mission to space, the country claims to have sent a monkey into space on a rocket, and recovered it alive after it returned to Earth. Unfortunately for those of us fascinated by spaceflight or terrified of Iranian rocket technology, there aren’t many details on the (reportedly) successful flight.

Back in September of 2011, Iran attempted to send a monkey into space, but the reports coming out of the country said the mission failed. Exactly how the mission failed, though, was not disclosed. The mission reportedly involved sending a rhesus monkey into space on a Kavoshgar-5 rocket, and was supposedly “not publicized” because — as Iran Deputy Science Minister Mohammad Mehdinejad-Nouri put it — none of the mission objectives were met. We don’t know what that meant for the monkeynaut.

The report was aired on Iranian state television, and some images of the monkey being prepared for takeoff were shown. The little guy was wearing a protective monkey-sized outfit, and was strapped into a monkey-sized safety seat. The Explorer rocket in which the monkey traveled, dubbed the Pishgam (which translates to Pioneer), was said to have traveled a height of 72 miles (120 kilometers). There were no other details of the launch, other than the monkey returned to Earth safely, and was hopefully greeted appropriately.

Iran sends a monkey into space and recovers it alive: Should we worry?
Invisibility Cube

Lately, it seems like you can’t click on a handful of links on the internet without running into some kind of prototype invisibility cloak. Though this device can now be added to that list, it’s more like a cube than a cloak, and something out of the ordinary — even for a notion that is as abnormal as becoming invisibile.

Invisibility cloaks seem to run rampant nowadays, but even though they’re “common,” none of them are like what you see in the movies. There isn’t a thin sheet of fabric that you can toss over your head and then completely disappear, with your arm becoming visible when you reach out from under the cloak to grab something. Recently, at TED2013 in Long Beach, California, assistant professor of physics at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University, Baile Zhang, showed off a little device that has the same outcome of an invisibility cloak, but isn’t a cloak in the least. The device is a little cube, only a few inches in height, but ably performs its function. Zhang seems to be using the term “cloak” not to refer to the garb, but the action. This is fine by us, because look at it go:
