How it’s made: Hurst Challenger

Page #1

Autoblog.com featured a great story about how current Hurst Challengers are made. For those who don’t know – Hurst is an aftermarket high-performance car parts supplier founded in 1958. Their transmission shifters and other products became legendary in auto racing, particularly in drag racing and among car customizers.

Current Hurst Challenger is basically a $22-32K upgrade package for R/T and SRT8 Challengers. Customers have to provide standard Challengers in order to get Hurst ones back. Click NEXT for more!

Hurst paint department applies gold stripes to front bumper, hood, trunk, and rear fascia and they actually paint Hurst logos on the fenders instead of simply putting decals. Series 5 models get White Pear paint scheme [as SEMA show car]. Click NEXT for more!

After body paint and/or stripes are finished Challengers get their engine, suspension and interior upgrades. Series 4 and 5 Challengers get a Vortech supercharger that puts 572 HP to these Hemis. The suspension is completely overhauled with parts from Eibach including new springs, adjustable shocks [ride height and stiffness] and sway bars. A full Magnaflow stainless steel cat-back exhaust system is installed afterwards for truly muscular sound. Polished forged 20-inch Hurst rims fits BFGoodrich KDW tires and replaces standard Dodge wheels.

Interior upgrades feature gold perforated inserts and gold stitching on the seats and center armrest and doors. The legendary Hurst shifter makes the car a real Hurst Challenger. They now use a special gold handle instead of the classic white ball. Click NEXT for more!

It is customers’ choice either get ones car delivered at a Dodge dealer or pick it up themselves at Hurst’s facility. Each Hurst Challenger is registered and gets Hurst serial number. Each customer also gets a photo book of their Hurst conversion process.

Check out this incredible 1963 Chevrolet Corvette – it’s the World’s Fastest street legal corvette out there! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime project, that took more than 5 years and realized by Rod Saboury. But let’s get straight to the point – enjoy this mean machine, read the full article and check out the 100+ images in the gallery!

Design and Construction

The 5-year project was started in 2001. In the first 2 years, drawings, schematics, adherence to drag racing rules and local motor vehicle requirements were foremost in the preliminary design. Finding the correct car was also at the top of the “To Do” list. When the car was eventually found, it was delivered to Rod as a shell on a wooden pallet with no frame, the original VIN tags, clear title and a price tag of $800…It was Perfect! Source: http://www.musclevehicles.com

The body was sent to long time friend and fiberglass guru Frank Morawski where the body was stretched 12 inches in three places to maintain proportions. It was widened 3 inches in the rear, the quarter panels were raised 2 inches, a rear wing was recessed into the body and a functioning trunk was created that looked like it came from the GM factory. Overall, it was no easy feat requiring hundreds of man-hours. Great Job Frank. Read more ! Source: http://www.musclevehicles.com

The formidable task of the chassis construction was awarded to Lowdown Hotrods in Canada. A full chromoly double frame rail tube chassis built as per NHRA guidelines for a car capable of 200+ mph. LDHR was awarded Chassis Builder of the year for 2007.

Numerous designs were considered and the final creation is something to behold without the body in place. It was almost a shame to cover this unique frame design created by Lowdown Hotrods.Source: http://www.musclevehicles.com

The Michigan based engine shop of Mike Moran had the task of building the engine for Rod’s car. Mike originally designed a 400 SBC engine with big block heads and two 88mm Garrett Turbos to power the car. Mike also designed and built the computer needed to control the nearly 2200 original horsepower rating. In the 5 years since the original build, the engine has been replaced with a billet small block 427 engine currently rated at 2600 HP. Source: http://www.musclevehicles.com

Drag Racing Artist David Carl Peters designed the spectacular custom paint. The design consists of mirror-imaged graphics both inside and outside of the car.

Connery’s Custom Paint applied the final finish using House of Kolor Candy Brandywine with accents in candy neon with unique marbleized accents throughout the car. Source: http://www.musclevehicles.com

This 2008 Roush Stage 3 Mustang GT with a custom 1000 Horsepower Twin Turbocharged V-8 is a piece of art. This car started as the Top of the line $59,000 MSRP Roush Stage 3 which includes supercharged 430 Horsepower V8. It was then sent to the performance shop to have this fully polished $40,000 1000 HP Twin Turbo motor built. While the motor was out, it went to the custom paint shop where it was fully diassembled & custom airbrish painted. Every edge of this car has been airbrushed with custom paint including the engine bay, under hood , under trunklid, door jams, EVEN THE INSIDE OF EACH WHEEL WAS AIRBRUSH PAINTED WITH SKULLS  !!! The paintwork and body modifications alone cost over $30,000.  The suspension & brakes were upgraded to match performance. The interior is custom two tone leather with Stage 3 embriodered in the seats. This is a REAL Roush stage 3 car that has over $150,000 invested in it.

Here is the factory Roush stage 3 overview discription without additional upgrades:

Overview

The Stage 3 Mustang is the pinnacle of the ROUSH “Stage” Mustangs. It builds off the styling from the Stage 1, the handling from the Stage 2, and adds its own piece of the pie, a supercharged 5.0L-4v powertrain. It is the perfect interfusion of styling, handling and brut power. The Stage 3 is everything a muscle car can and should be.

image 2008-ford-mustang-gt-custom-paint155_003.jpg

At the heart of the Stage 3 is the supercharged 5.0L-4v powertrain pumping out a massive 565 horsepower and 505 lb-ft of torque, more than enough power to crush you into the back of your seat at the stab of the throttle. Creating the extra power is the R2300 supercharger featuring Eaton’s® TVS (Twin Vortices Series) patented technology which delivers greatly enhanced thermal efficiency, produces higher volumetric capacity, and enables higher supercharger operating speeds, all of which allow for more power and better fuel efficiency in a smaller, lighter package. With the PCM calibrated by ROUSH engineers to the perfect combination of horsepower, drivability and durability, ROUSH feels completely comfortable offering an impressive 3 year/36,000 mile complete powertrain warranty. Via: musclevehicles.com

Standard chassis components include a complete suspension system and an 18-inch by 10-inch cast aluminum, five spoke, chrome ROUSH wheel wrapped in the ROUSH/Cooper co-developed RS3 ultra high-performance tire. The suspension system consists of a larger, stiffer front stabilizer bar to reduce body roll and provide balanced, neutral handling. It also includes a unique ROUSH designed anti-wheel hop kit, twin-tube shocks with unique valving, increased rate springs as well as upgraded bushings and jounce bumpers. ROUSH chassis engineers spent thousands of hours in development and testing to create the perfect set up to aid in acceleration, cornering, stopping and ride quality.

image 2008-ford-mustang-gt-custom-paint155_005.jpg

As with the other “Stage” Mustangs the Stage 3 carries the 6th generation body package, referred to as the “R6″ aerobody package. The R6 aerobody package incorporates a newly designed ROUSH upper grille, high-flow lower grille, corner fascia aero pockets with driving lamps and front chin splitter. It also includes a new ROUSH hood scoop, rocker panel and rear fascia side splitters, a three-piece rear decklid spoiler as well a new ROUSH rear aero valance featuring race-inspired diffusers and integrating new dual chambered, chrome exhaust tips. Via: musclevehicles.com

The Stage 3 gets an RS3 graphics package available in multiple color combinations to allow owners to personalize to their taste, a ROUSH front windshield banner, a Stage 3 badge in the upper grille and ROUSH “R” fender badges. The rear decklid receives a Stage 3 badge, a faux gas cap “R” badge and is finished with Jack Roush’s signature graphic.

Standard components inside the Stage 3 consist of a custom gauge cluster (when built on premium base models only), ROUSH embroidered floor mats, a ROUSH center console button, a Stage 3 dash medallion and Jack Roush’s signature graphic on the dash. Under the hood are a serialized Stage 3 plaque and a chassis build plaque.

image 2008-ford-mustang-gt-custom-paint155_009.jpg

Because the Stage 3 comes so well equipped, the only exterior body option is the rear quarter window louvers and graphics. Inside the car is the all new Stage 3 Interior Package consisting of Stage 3 embroidered leather seating with suede inserts and highlight stitching, suede door panel inserts with highlight stitching and a suede shift boot with highlight stitching. There is also a vent gauge pod and LED boost gauge, a suede wrapped performance steering wheel, a white or black shifter ball, ROUSH illuminated sill plates (cars equipped with ambient lighting), billet aluminum racing pedals and a convertible light bar as optional equipment.

Chassis and engine options include two 20-inch wheels options (chrome or hyper black), four different brake packages (red two-piston sport, red four-piston performance, black four-piston performance or six-piston competition), a trunk mounted tool kit, ROUSH laser cut hood struts and red or black ROUSH engine coil covers. And to hear the 565 horsepower rumble out the car is the ROUSH dual chamber off-road exhaust system. Via: musclevehicles.com
