How it’s made: Hurst Challenger

Autoblog.com featured a great story about how current Hurst Challengers are made. For those who don’t know – Hurst is an aftermarket high-performance car parts supplier founded in 1958. Their transmission shifters and other products became legendary in auto racing, particularly in drag racing and among car customizers.


Current Hurst Challenger is basically a $22-32K upgrade package for R/T and SRT8 Challengers. Customers have to provide standard Challengers in order to get Hurst ones back. Click NEXT for more!

Hurst paint department applies gold stripes to front bumper, hood, trunk, and rear fascia and they actually paint Hurst logos on the fenders instead of simply putting decals. Series 5 models get White Pear paint scheme [as SEMA show car]. Click NEXT for more!

After body paint and/or stripes are finished Challengers get their engine, suspension and interior upgrades. Series 4 and 5 Challengers get a Vortech supercharger that puts 572 HP to these Hemis. The suspension is completely overhauled with parts from Eibach including new springs, adjustable shocks [ride height and stiffness] and sway bars. A full Magnaflow stainless steel cat-back exhaust system is installed afterwards for truly muscular sound. Polished forged 20-inch Hurst rims fits BFGoodrich KDW tires and replaces standard Dodge wheels.

Quite often automakers sell or auction pace cars from big races, but rarely (if ever) do they give them away. In celebration of Bristol Motor Speedway’s 50th anniversary, Ford will give away the 2011 Mustang pace car from the event.



Opening its doors in 1961, this year marks the 50th anniversary of Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee. To celebrate the storied track, Ford will give away the custom-built pace car designed specifically for the anniversary. The one-off car is built around a 2011 Mustang GT and features a custom two-tone black-on-gold paint scheme, black Ford racing wheels, and an exhaust upgrade. Ford values the car at $44,000, nearly $15,000 more than the price of a stock GT.




Fans can enter to win the car on the official Bristol Motor Speedway 50th Anniversary webpage. Among the entrants, three finalists will be awarded a trip to the Irwin Tools Night Race weekend in August. The three will each be given a key, one of which will start the car and be crowned the winner. Also sponsored by Scotts Lawn Care, the winner is set to receive a pallet of the company’s products.

Ford To Give Away Mustang Pace Car For Bristol Motor Speedway’s 50th Anniversary


It’s not often I get nervous when I’m thrown the keys to someone else’s car, but then again the ’56 Cadillac I just buckled up in certainly isn’t your average ride – or at least the average when it comes to cars that I’m accustomed to driving. Piloting, or in this case ‘captaining’, a left-hand-drive car on the wrong side of the road it was designed to be driven on wasn’t the issue here. It was the shear size of the beast coupled with blunt brakes and steering best described as ‘vague’ that had me a little worried for its pristine panels and sparking chrome work. I soldiered on, pumping the gas pedal as I twisted on the key, awakening 400 cubic inches of Chevrolet V8 under the hood. It sounded grumpy. I liked it.Source: http://www.speedhunters.com



The ’56 belongs to Todd and Kym Wylie. I’ve know Todd for a long time when we both worked on NZ Performance Car and his automotive infatuation was a 1.8L (4G93) Mitsubishi Lancer GSR that had been extensively tuned to cut 11-second quarters. These days he heads upNZV8 magazine and – for the meantime at least – enjoys a slightly less frantic pace behind the wheel driving this ‘mild kustom’ creation. When Todd and Kym first got their hands on the Coupé back in 2009 it had been in dry storage for 15 years. The owner didn’t want to sell, but money eventually talked and the Cadillac was winched onto the back of a transporter and towed home. In a previous life it had spent the better part of four decades in Arizona, and it was there, in the desert, that its factory black paint had slowly succumbed to the elements and weathered to a beautiful bronze patina. After getting the Coupé registered for the road – an intensive eight month project in itself, Todd tells me – the car was driven that way for a couple of years, clocking up thousands of road tripping and cruise miles in the process.Source: http://www.speedhunters.com



If original and unrestored cars are your thing, then you might be wondering why the Cadillac simply wasn’t left in that tarnished state that people pay good money to replicate, rather than the custom paint that adorns the acres of bodywork today. As much as they loved the way the patina looked and suited the car, New Zealand’s often humid and wet climate had started to take its toll, and the smooth bronzed metal started to become pitted.Source: http://www.speedhunters.com

What followed was an intensive six month rebuild, and one that took the Cadillac all the way back to a bare body sitting on a stripped-down chassis. At one point 11 shops around the country had different pieces of the ’56 in their possession, and Todd says it was feat keeping the project logistically ticking along, let alone the many late night hours spent out in the garage with Kym where the majority of the car’s reinvention took place.Source: http://www.speedhunters.com



What made the job even tougher than your average was the physical dimension of the Cadi’. At six meters, or close to 20-feet in length, there was a lot of it to tend to. After the whole body was soda blasted back to bare metal and beat into shape, countless hours of paint prep ensued. Only then were numerous coats of custom-mixed DuPont ‘Boogie Blue’ flowed on and over its dramatic factory lines by their painter, Andrew Town. A flaked roof (and dashboard), an extension of the kustom theme, is set off by white-wall tires over powder-coated steel rims dressed in spider caps and a lot of re-chroming.Source: http://www.speedhunters.com

Long devoid of its original Cadillac V8, under the hood sits a 400ci Chev motor featuring a selection of hop-up parts like World Racing cylinder heads, a lumpy Kelford cam, a Holley carb on an Edelbrock manifold and Block Hugger headers running into a custom twin 2.5″ exhaust system. When Todd and Kym got their hands on the car the small block was running really rough and only managed to muster 70-horsepower at the wheels on the dyno. Tuning saw that number raised to 150whp, but only when the new cam and exhaust was fitted could 240whp be realized. For 6.6-liters of bent eight that’s not a big number by any stretch of the imagination, but from where I was sitting it’s more than enough to haul the 2.2-tonne chassis along quite pleasantly.Source: http://www.speedhunters.com



While the engine was out getting cleaned up, the engine room got plenty of love. The metal radiator cover, which was designed expertly bent-up by local rod shop Bodymods, is a nice cosmetic addition.Source: http://www.speedhunters.com



Although gruff at idle and noisy at all other times, the Chev set up is both reliable and useable – words that resonate throughout the entire build. Ensuring that the Cadi’ was nice to drive was always high on the priority list, so the suspension was overhauled with Koni Classic dampers, and the brakes with Wilwood four-pots at the front and retro-fitted discs at the back. By no means are the handling characteristics perfect – and Todd still had some issues to deal to at the time of my drive – but from what he told me the difference between how it is now and what it was like then is like night and day. Inside, the Cadi’ was stripped totally bare and retro-fitted with Dynamat sound deadening and a complete tuck ’n’ roll retrim in leather and vinyl. It’s a far cry from the original interior, where Todd tells me seat stuffing that turned to dust would erupt from tears in the upholstery whenever it was sat upon. The interior includes a steering wheel, shifter and door lock knobs from Mooneyes, along with all the factory Cadillac trimming like electric windows, electric sliding front bench seat and the ‘Autronic-Eye’ headlight high-beam/low-beam switcher (that device atop the lefthand side of the dashboard). When the character of squeaks and rattles become too much on the long trips there’s a large audio system to wind up. Filling the trunk – or partially filling the trunk as the case may be here, given the cavernous void – with a custom install might not be the traditional thing to do, but there was never any prerequisite to follow a script.Source: http://www.speedhunters.com

There’s a timeless appeal to machines like this, and even though cars like Todd and Kym’s ’56 are becoming older and rarer as the years roll on, there are more classic American cars – transcending all sub genres – on the road in New Zealand than there ever has been.Source: http://www.speedhunters.com

In Todd and Kym’s case they’ve already made it – if only just. Given the Cadi’s length, the lining on the end wall of their garage had to be removed to allow enough room for the door to be closed behind it, and because of its width their DC5 Honda Integra Type R drive car is relegated to outdoors.Source: http://www.speedhunters.com



Collectively, Todd and Kym are always conjuring up new ideas when it comes to cars, and even though the Cadi’ build is still fresh, plans are already afoot for a couple of other American V8-based projects – both of which are about as far removed from each other, and this one, as possible. NECESSARY EVIL: CRUISIN’ IN A MILD KUSTOM CADI’

Tuners are still exploring the limits of the horsepower potential of the Mustang’s Coyote 5.0L V8, perhaps none more so than Jon Lund, Jake Long and Ken Bjonnes of Power by the Hour. The threesome have been developing and testing their twin-turbo system for the current Mustang for a little over a year now, and during that time they’ve proven the car’s performance merits with a 9-second quarter mile pass and doing the standing mile at over 200 mph.


Despite their impressive achievements, the trio isn’t quite satisfied and have recently added even more power while experimenting with a prototype of an upcoming high performance Coyote engine block from Ford Racing. The result is an astounding 1,266 horsepower and 1,058 lb-ft torque at the rear wheels, which the company says is the highest output of any street-driven Coyote-powered Mustang.

[Via:musclevehicles.com]Peer over the flawlessly straight panels and realize W1 white is the perfect blank canvas for Dodge’s finest curves.  Massaged until they glowed every panel shows the quality and thoroughness for which Restorations by Julius is known throughout the Mopar community.  Up front you’ll find a restored grille held in place by all of the proper and 500-specific brackets.  Move over the mint fenders, super clean doors and arrow straight quarters to wind up at the signature Charger taillights.  Move over the greenhouse with excellent glass and highly polished trim to the 500-specific rear window plug and original decklid and you’ll see nothing was overlooked.  Painted steel wheels with dog dish center caps and new Firestone Wide Ovals and the red bumblebee stripe finish off the clean and businesslike exterior.  There are two known 440 cars in this color combination, too, but the Hemi up front changes desirability drastically.Continue Reading the article and click on Next

[Via:musclevehicles.com]Documentation is critical to the rarest cars and this one isn’t lacking–both its original fender tag and broadcast sheet are here.  Highlights include the A11 Aero package, A32 Super Performance Axle Package with the 4.10 Dana rear, W1 White paint, C6R red vinyl buckets, B41/B51 power disc brakes, W25 rocker moldings and the S81 sports woodgrain steering wheel.  Other than a tick tock tach in place of the factory clock this 500 was restored by the numbers.


Open the properly plated gray phosphate hood latches and examine the engine compartment carefully.  With the 4.10’s out back and a minimum of creature comforts it’s no wonder the engine shown here is a properly dated replacement rather than the original mill.  The proper 4619S and 4621S carbs are on the original intake manifold while an original dual point distributor is properly in place.  The rebuilt 426 sports all new parts on the inside and fresh, even paint outside–this is a show car, after all.  The rechromed air cleaner is up top, a correct 054 radiator is up front with an original transmission cooler and correct fasteners are everywhere.  Make no mistake about the car’s show credentials, though–this car’s still all “ate up with motor,” as the circle track guys like to say.Continue Reading the article and click on Next

[Via:musclevehicles.com]Inside you’ll find a host of original parts mixed sparingly with correct reproduction pieces.  You’ll sit on new upholstery on the seats while admiring new door panels, a new headliner and a new carpet set.  Performance Car Graphics-restored gauges sit in front of you lying behind rechromed instrument panel bezels.  The original seat belts hold you in place, rechromed armrest bases and handles are at your sides and the dash pads are excellent originals.


Few people get a chance to see a Hemi 500, and fewer people still can claim ownership.  Rare and desirable, this is one Mopar you don’t want to pass on!
