Top 10 20th Century Concept Cars We Hoped We’d Drive By Now

Children of the 1980s have the year 2015 marked on our calendars. The reason for this is because the movie Back To the Future II told us we would have flying cars and hover boards by 2015. There are still two years left to mass produce. If an apocalypse can theoretically occur in a day, then we can still hold out hope for 2015. Every year, car manufacturers unveil their latest ideas into what are known as ‘concept cars.’ These concept cars often will not be mass produced, but we are still holding out a bit of hope that one days these beauties could be on the streets. We also want to reach our sky garages by jet packs as long as we are at it.

10. Autobianchi Runabout Bertone (1969)

At the Turin Motor Show in 1969, the Autobianchi Runabout Bertone made its debut. This car was the closest thing that you would probably ever see to actually owning Speed Racer’s Mark 5. If the future depicted in the Waschowski’s movie was to become a reality, then the Runabout Bertone model should be massed produced by now. The Runabout Bertone was not even inspired by the automobile world. The basic concept behind this car was to put a speed motorboat on wheels. Now, just imagine if the wheels were actually retractable and the Runabout was either a convertible motorboat or submarine. The dropped ball on the Runabout could have given us to James Bond or Condorman action.

9. Italdesign Machimoto (1986)

The Machimoto (1986) was an attempt at the evolution of the Dune Buggy. It was essentially a bridge between open air dirt riding and Total Recall. Basically, a combination with Volkswagon engineers to try and combine the stability of a car with the open air enjoyment of riding a motorcycle. The Machimoto was designed to comfortably seat nine. The Machimoto looks more at home riding a rail ala The Black Hole or being a street worthy roller coaster car. It sports a sleek boxy open air look that we were supposed to fall in love with here in the future. Unfortunately, we are as far away now from the Machimoto as we are from having everyday silver or gold pants.

8. Chevy Astro III (1969)

The Chevy Astro III came out during a time in which the Moon Shot was influencing everything. The question today becomes “Why aren’t we driving around miniature spaceships on freeways… right now?” It certainly seemed like a possibility in 1969. A little imagination and this baby would have been your driving X-Wing fighter today. One of the truly great innovations of the Astro III were the rear view mirrors. Do you not see them on the car? That is exactly the point. The rear view mirrors were actually small closed circuit televisions in the interior that would broadcast what was going on around the car. If the closed circuit television idea had come to fruition for everything, all we would lose is one ‘objects in mirror’ joke in Jurassic Park as well as a single Meat Loaf song. We would have lived.

7. Ford FX-Atmos (1954)

The Ford FX-Atmos debuted at the Chicago auto show in 1954. This seeming proto Batmobile used the term FX ( for Future Experimental ) and seems like it would be more comfortable riding the airways on Coruscant than any where near the freeway system. The Atmos name was a nod to the idea that cars could one bay be run by nuclear reactors. To this day, we do not drive anything that looks quite as futuristic as the Atmos. You can only imagine that crowd’s disappointment if they saw a twenty first century KIA Optima. A degraded nuclear core was a central plot point in The Dark Knight Rises that might eliminate millions of people. Just imagine the wholesale destruction some schmuck could cause by changing out one on his modern day Atmos.

6. Bertone BAT 5 (1953)

Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnica 5 was an attempt to make the lightest most aerodynamic car possible. The Bertone BAT 5 eliminate weight as well as wind resistance as much as possible. There was even an attempt to eliminate wind resistance in turning wheels. The result? This is a car out of your futuristic wet dreams lighter than most cars on the road right now. Also, the BAT 5 could easily top 200 mph. If we had gone down the road of the BAT 5, the muscle car era would have turned into the steroid muscle car era. Literally, the idea behind the Bertone BAT 5 was to have a mini jet cruising down the highway. If that was going to be the regular cars, just imagine what the cop cars to stop them would have had to look like.

5. GM Firebird II (1956)

The Firebird II is the only car ever constructed out of titanium. We don’t think that you are quite taking the journey with us here. Titanium is the same material in which Stewie Griffin talks about making death rays from and Iron Man villains construct their armor from. The Firebird II looks like a combination of a shark and a pod racer. The amazing part is that the Firebird II was an imagination of the futuristic family roadster. This car would have probably taken the run time of National Lampoon’s Vacation down to around four minutes. That is probably a bit of hyperbole but Clark Griswold would have had no trouble keeping up with Christie Brinkley in and updated version of this baby.

4. Ford Nucleon (1958)

Believe it or not, there was a time in which nuclear energy was seen as a source of power for every day use. The vision was that nuclear energy would provide a clean cost efficient alternative to all other types of fuel. Just imagine, you could power your car, talk on your phone, and scold the kids with all three of your arms! During this time of unfettered and possibly ignorant optimism, there was the scale model produced of the Ford Nucleon. The Nucleon imagined a future in which cars would run on the same concept as nuclear submarines. There would be nuclear powering stations on every corner. Somewhere, Mr. Burns would put his fingers together and say ‘Excellent.’ There was never a working proto type but the Nucleon gave us a glimpse of what might have and what might still be.

3. Chrysler Turbine Car (1962-1964)

Have you ever sat down and pondered what would happen if they actually put a jet engine into a car? Well, take heart Bucky, you are not alone. Chrysler spent about three decades pondering whether your car could style around like it was straight out of Men In Black. The Chrysler Turbine car could run on your choice of diesel fuel, unleaded gasoline, jet fuel, or vegetable oil. The findings on whether or not it would also slice and fry potatoes are a little more vague. Unfortunately, you cannot even buy these things on the black market as most of them were destroyed by Chrysler or donated to museums. There are only three fully functional Chrysler Turbine Cars out of 54 produced. The technology was later used in the M1 Abrams Battle Tank. The possibilities were endless… and awesome.

2. Ford Gyron ( 1961 )

In the recent Men In Black III, Will Smith’s J character said that “two wheels is like my minimum.” It stands to reason that J would have loved (or at least tolerated) the Ford Gyron. The Gyron was a two wheeled fully encapsulated car that looked more like a TRON light cycle than anything currently on the road. At auction, a mere model of the Gyron sold for forty thousand dollars. The Gyron operated on a series of gyroscopes to operate the hybrid car/motorcycle. For being envisioned over fifty years ago, the Gyron still looks like it could be the future of automobile travel.

1. Lincoln Futura ( 1955 )

The Lincoln Futura is still embedded in our collective imagination not for what the Futura was but for what the Futura would become. The Futura was originally produced at a cost of a quarter of a million dollars in the 1950’s tio highlight potential advancement in car design. Ten years later, the Futura was repainted and turned into the infamous Batmobile for the Adam West television series. Years later, the Dark Knight trilogy Batmobile would be postulated to come out of Wayne Enterprises Research and Development department. Of course, the Futura was never actually mass produced but everyone certainly wanted one.

This element inspired device is called the iFluid idea Macbook Water. The iFluid device has less booting time than a cellphone and is used by pouring fluid on a flat surface to start the machine and to shut it down simply wipe the fluid off the surface.

2. Macbook 3D

With 3D technology being developed and marketed in television sets, the technology on your computer screen isn’t that far of leap. That paired with a hinge-less spine design, this Macbook design may take the market by storm someday soon.

3. Apple Mac-Tribook

Working to fix the ever present screen space problem notebook users have, the triBook has two additional screens, increasing the total screen space to 21”. This allows for more multi-tasking, but despite its increased efficiency it is gamers who are most excited by this new design concept.

4. Foldable Macbook Touch

The first flexible Macbook ever has an OLED touchscreen, meaning you can fold the screen to half is size for easier maneuvering or unfold it for large screen work.

5. Virtual Macbook Air

This concept design is more of a redesign as a lighter MacBook Air. This MacBook air features a virtual keyboard and two useable touchscreens, making the need for a mouse, well, unnecessary. The virtual keyboard is created by a small laser projector displaying on a flat laptop. This is a slimmer, and sexier, version.

6. Digi-Roll Macbook

This Macbook concept design increases your laptop’s portability that features an in-between configuration, theoretically giving quick email browsing possible. The straps double as USB plug-ins and the Macbook has a detachable webcam for use on your Macbook or that you can wear on your wrist!

7. Transparent Macbook

Ever get tired of looking from your computer screen to your television while doing work? That is a problem of the past! With a transparent laptop screen you can now watch your television screen through you laptop screen.

8. Macbook Mini

Less than half the size of any Macbook yet in production, this Macbook is a convenient portable concept design. This Macbook includes two mock-ups for a foldable or sliding trackpad for when you aren’t using the keyboard.

9. Macbook with Optimus Maximus

Combining the Apple OLED technology with Optimus Maximus would create a customizable look for heavy computer users.

10. Macbook Folder

An ultra slim e-folder equipped with a touch screen display, a large-button keyboard, two built-in speakers, Mac OS, Bluetooth and wireless LAN, this Macbook is less innovative than any of the other concept designs on this list. However, it may be one of the most likely concepts to be realized in the near future.

Apple’s innovations seem to know no bounds, and these concept designs certainly push the limits of the imagination, let alone the chance of production. It will be interesting to see which of these concepts come to life in the years to come.

Top 10 Futuristic Concept Bike Designs

Innovations are born from ideas, and, in this case, from hand drawn designs. While many of these still remain a sketch in a notepad or a 3-D image in a computer, eventually we could see them riding up the street or highway in our local neighborhood!

10. Icare Motorbike

The Icare is a high-end futuristic bike that includes style and a unique, one of a kind look. Designed by Enzyme in Paris for Honda, the Icare motorcycle is conceptualized to have a 6 cylinder 1800CC engine. This beauty could also be more than just a concept before long considering Enzyme’s last concept, Atomo V1000, went into production.

9. Peraves Monotracer Jet Bike

You may think you saw this design before in a Sci-Fi movie somewhere. The Peraves MonoTracer Jet Bike is an aerodynamic design with speeds that top off at 155 miles per hour. Similar to the controls to a car, the design is a pedal operated accelerator with steering wheel control. The two door, dual seat design is an updated version of the Swiss Econmobile.

8. Wind-Solar Energy Bike

This eco-friendly, wind-solar concept bike conserves energy – your energy that is. Can’t make it up that steep slope? No problem, switch over the automatic motor! The Wind-Solar Energy hybrid bike is covered with solar panels with a spoiler to help provide life force to lighten the bike weight and a motor and electricity coils setting designed at the front and back wheel. This means the Wind-Solar Energy bike can produce electric power while rotating at ordinary times.

7. Harley Davidson 2020

This is not your traditional one of a kind Harley, but it is still one of a kind. This design will be easy to recognize and retains the company’s well-known air-cooled v-twin powerplant. Other features are a powerful 883CC engine with big wheels and bearings. Those are the only design features the company has kept, however, and the design uses a hubless drive system as its centerpiece.

6. Bombadier Embrio

Using hydrogen fuel cells and an electric motor for the main wheel power, the Bombadier Embrio emits only water as its fuel by-product. Gyroscopically balanced, the design is mean to be a one-wheeled recreational and commuting vehicle. This robotic unicycle is a “smart,” or robotic to be more precise, vehicle with sensors to balance passengers. With a trigger on the left handlebar to accelerate and turned by shifting body-weight rather than steering.

5. Detonater V4 6.0

This one of a kind concept bike has taken the bike design one step further. Without conventional steering, the Detonater has an electromagnetic sled behind the front wheel and the rider controls the impulse with two independent handlebars where the front light is mounted.

4. Victory Vision 800

Trying to differentiate themselves from Harley, the Victory Vision 800 is designed to show how innovative and radical Victory’s thinking is. Using a 800CC, parallel-twin engine with a Continuously Variable Transmission, there is no clutch and gear shifting all the foot controls to the handle bars.

3. Hyanide

This all-terrain concept motorcycle looks more like a military tank or high-tech snowmobile than a motorcycle. Using tread rather than wheels, the Hyanide has an advanced turning system making it capable of making sharp, fast turns because the entire frame of the bike bends to make the turn.

2. Batpod

This concept may be the most recognizable from its appearance in The Dark Knight Rises batman movie. Designed by Nathan Crowley, the concept is powered by a high-performance, water-cooled, single-cylinder engine.

1. “One” Folding Bike

Worried about having your bike stolen or simply hoping for a more efficient way of transporting and storing your bike? The “One” folding bike solves your problem by folding into a small super-portable package. A prototype has already been created for the super futuristic design by Thomas Owen, but it doesn’t seem quite road ready yet.

Top 10 Futuristic Concept Hotels

Man has always been a natural innovator looking to the future to push boundaries and out-do their predecessors. These 10 futuristic concept hotels are no exception to that rule. Gathering inspiration from, one can only assume, science fiction novels and movies – will these hotels be the five stars of the future?

10. Hotel Full Moon and Hotel Crescent

These two hotels, designed to be counterpoints to one another, are planned to be constructed in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku. These hotels, while claimed to be inspired by the moon, look more like the Death Star from Star Wars than ultra-chic and modern hotels. These hotels are meant to sit in Full Moon Bay, will be joined by three tall residential buildings and a fourth, 43 floor office building.

9. The Poseidon Undersea Resort

Bruce Jones, a ground-breaking submarine designer for the rich and famous, has directed his skills toward the lucrative hotel industry on an island in Fiji. The design will be surrounded by 5,000 acres of lagoon and includes 550 square feet luxury underwater suites. Need more incentive? The resorts website states that, ‘the first 100 guest will have their names permanently inscribed on two monuments one on the island, and one on the floor of the lagoon.’

8. Waterworld

Designed around the Songjiang, China lagoon-like quarry the 400-bed resort and hotel is shaped within the lagoon’s natural elements, with distinctive subterranean public areas and guest rooms. Designed by the Atkin’s Architecture Group, the group and design won last year’s first prize award in an international design competition.

7. The Diamond Ring Hotel

Also known as the Voyager V1, there is very little known about this hotel other than it is a hotel of the future in the shape of a ferris wheel. Indications lead us to believe the hotel will be located in Abu Dhabi and is currently based on preliminary architectural renderings.

6. Hotel Pods

This concept hotel first imagined by Thomson Holidays in a report he released, “2024: A Holiday Odyssey.” The idea of these pod hotels is that they will be foldable pods built on stilts that offer all of the luxurious amenities of a traditional hotel. Most interestingly, guests could design their own rooms by projecting their favorite images on the walls. These pods could be transported to any location in the event of a tourism shift or terrorist attack.

5. Hydropolis

The Hydropolis Underwater Hotel and Resort, designed by Professor Roland Dieterle, is planned to be the world’s first underwater luxury resort. Located 66 ft underwater in the Persian Gulf, there are reported talks with the Disney Corporation to hold an underwater production of the Little Mermaid in the hotel’s lobby. Seems fitting, doesn’t it?

4. The Lunatic Hotel

This hotel is truly futuristic in that it is not projected to be completed until 2050. Steel and water will have to  be launched to the moon for this endeavor, but its designer, Hans-Jurgen Rombaut, claims that the existing minerals and ores on the moon can supply a majority of building materials. The most interesting feature? Guests will supposedly be able to experience low-gravity in specially designed towers.

3. The Apeiron Hotel

While still being designed, the Aperion Hotel would be the second self-awarded 7 star hotel in Dubai. With a jungle theme in the 350 luxury apartment suites, the futuristic hotel includes a private lagoon, beaches, restaurants, cinemas, shopping, an art gallery, spas, and conference facilities.

2. Aeroscraft

A flying hotel equal to two football fields in the air would be able to accommodate 250 passenders and would travel at a speed of 174 miles per hour. The airship would provide tourists with a host of amenities including a casino, restaurants, and staterooms. In short, this hotel would be similar to a cruise liner in the air.

1. The Inflatable Space Hotel

This space hotel has a much sooner expected completion date of 2015. The Commercial Space Station Skywalker is an inflatable hotel to be located – where else? – in space! This hotel comes fully equipped for other future technology like space yachts and moon cruisers, and not to mention an estimated $1 million a night price tag.

These concept hotels may be in design and even some prototypes, however, for now some of these science fiction beauties are likely to stay just that for a while longer, fiction.
