Texas tuner John Hennessey’s work on big Detroit iron has its acolytes and detractors, but the man knows how to show off his wares. To highlight the top-speed performance of some of his big rigs, Texas authorities let him take a full-speed blast down the state’s newest toll road outside Austin that opened today, one that features an 85-mph speed limit. It’s just long enough for the 1,200-hp, twin-turbo Cadillac CTS-V coupe to hit 220.5 mph.

Hennessey told Jalopnik that the stunt came about after a conversation with state officials and an offer to test out a toll tag system to see if it could accurately report fines at triple-digit speeds. In addition to his 1,200-hp CTS-V coupe, Hennessey also brought a 707-hp Chevy Camaro ZL1 that managed to hit203.9 mph along the same strip, with an even better sound. Hennessey says the CTS-V might have done 230 mph had he been granted another mile of tarmac.

And for the record: All of the electronics used by Texas state officials, including their radar guns, worked perfectly during the run. Word to the wise: 85 mph will probably be fast enough.

Over the decades, Batman has relied on a fleet of cars, from a plain red convertible to the SWAT-team capable Tumbler of the Dark Knight movies. This car, however, remains “the” Batmobile for many fans — the first vehicle modified by customizer George Barris for the 1966 TV show. In January, Barris will sell it for the first time at auction after 50 years, and its price will likely hit “holy collector’s item!”

 

Barris didn’t start from scratch when 20th Century Fox asked him to build a car for their live-action Batman show in 1965 — and gave him three weeks to do it. Several years earlier, Barris had spent $1 to buy the 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car, which Ford had built by Ghia Body Works in Italy as if it knew the future involved two men in tights solving crime, complete with bubble canopy and out-there accessories. Barris quickly added orange piping, extra flares and new crime-stopping gear such as cable-cutter saw, smoke screen and of course the Batphone, Bat Ray and “Bat Turn” device — two parachutes that in theory could turn it 180 degrees.

After the show became a campy success, Barris and company created fiberglass copies of the Batmobile; they also re-used the original in several later projects, adding up-to-date gadgets and different paint jobs as they went. But unlike many of his TV and hot-rod creations, Barris always held onto the original Batmobile, which has been restored to its original colors.

It’s hard to estimate just how much the Batmobile might bring at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., in January. The record for a car from a movie or television show rests with the 1964 Aston Martin DB5 driven by Sean Connery as James Bond in “Goldfinger” at $4.2 million in 2010. That sounds pricey for a bit from a short-lived TV show, and Batfandom has not always translated into chasing collectable cars; an attempt in 2010 to sell one of five Tim Burton-era Batmobiles online garnered a high bid of only $110,000, well short of the $620,000 sought. Spending a million bucks on a Batmobile may sound crazy to most, but this one might get a few jokers to raise their hands.

Original 1966 Batmobile put up for sale by creator George Barris

Because the world can’t get strange enough, an animal training school in New Zealand has set out to prove that dogs have enough smarts to drive cars at low speeds, given weeks of instruction and a special set of paw controls. This video suggests they’ve succeeded, finally answering the question of what dogs would do if they ever caught a car they were chasing.

Arranged by the New Zealand chapter of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the stunt involved three dogs — Monty, Ginny and Porter — either found, roaming stray or given up by their owners. The SPCA, working with animal trainer Animals on Q, adapted a Mini Cooper to canine steering and put the pets through eight weeks of intensive training to teach them how to stop, go, steer and change gears.

According to the New Zealand Herald, SPCA hopes to use the driving dogs to showcase how intelligent its rescue animals are, and that they’re suited for work as helpers or just family pets. Next week, the SPCA will let the trio take a driving test on live national television in New Zealand, or as Down Under cats will call it, “armageddon.”

Kate Upton may be one of the world’s hottest models at the moment, and Mercedes-Benz may be paying several million dollars for her to star in its upcoming Super Bowl ad, but this 90-second teaser of Upton “washing” a new Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class sedan leaves me disturbed. My God, those sponges look like they came half off at the dollar store. No one’s even touching the wheels. That bucket’s probably filled with dishwashing liquid! No way Justin Verlander lets her clean his Mercedes SLS this way.

Kate Upton washes the Mercedes CLA for the Super Bowl, poorly

Eleven years ago, the head of Volkswagen popped out of a capsule-shaped vehicle barely able to hold two people and announced his ambition to construct the most efficient car the world has ever seen. Today, VW revealed the production version of that car known as the XL1, which it vows will travel 261 mpg on a gallon of diesel fuel. It’s an amazing engineering feat, a Beetle reborn for the 22nd century — but the world may not be ready for it.

 

Saving energy in an automobile usually requires running a smaller engine, cutting weight and reducing aerodynamic drag to a minimum, and in the XL1, VW pushes all three steps to their modern limits. Power comes from a two-cylinder, 0.8-liter diesel — essentially half of VW’s standard 1.6-liter four-cylinder diesel plant — mounted in the rear of the XL1, linked to a 7-speed transmission, a 5.5 kWh lithium-ion battery and electric motor. The two-seat body of the XL1 has a 0.189 coefficient of drag (a Toyota Prius has a 0.25 Cd) and it weighs just 1,752 lbs., about half of a typical American midsize sedan.

That combination allows the XL1 to travel 31 miles on electricity alone, and over 310 miles on a tank of fuel, for what VW claims is a mileage rating of 261 mpg (or 313 mpg by European standards) — better than any other gas, diesel or electric-powered vehicle. That’s twice as efficient as the most miserly car for sale in the United States, the Scion iQ electric — which can only travel 38 miles on a full charge.

To build the XL1, Volkswagen also had to use engineering extremes usually not found outside a racetrack. The body of the XL1 will be made from carbon fiber, although using a process VW claims will be far cheaper than those applied by supercar builders such as Ferrari and Lamborghini. The XL1 will be assembled by hand in a special section of VW’s Osnabrueck factory in Germany. And to ensure the safety of the passengers in case the XL1 rolls over, the scissor doors can be blasted open with explosive bolts.

But that efficiency comes with a few sacrifices, with speed first among them. Together, the electric motor and engine produce 68 hp and 103 lb-ft of torque. VW says that’s enough to launch the XL1 to 62 mph in 12.7 seconds — although it suggests not doing so. Top speed is limited to 99 mph. And the two seat interior of the XL1 has to look stylish, because there’s nothing behind the seats; the XL1 will offer a limited amount of space under the hood. To save weight further, only a cutout of the windows roll down, like the old Subaru SVX.

Given the combination of exotic materials, engineering costs and low-speed, hand-built production, there’s no way the XL1 will make a profit for VW. It exists only due to the will of VW Chairman Ferdinand Piech — grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, the designer of the original Beetle — who has pushed VW to refine the idea of the XL1 for more than a decade. For all that VW revealed today, it didn’t announce prices, and that’s the one bit of data that will determine whether the XL1 makes sense as anything other than a corporate science project.
