With 662 horsepower and a top speed of more than 200 miles per hour, the 2013 Shelby GT500 is undoubtedly the current king of American muscle cars. But how does it compare to European’s muscle machines? The car magazine EVO wanted to find out, and pitted the only 2013 GT500 in all of England against the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. The Mercedes is undoubtedly at a disadvantage when it comes to horsepower – packing just 451 horsepower and 442 lb-ft torque, but it also comes with a lighting quick 7-speed automatic transmission. Watch Video! When Ford launched the 2013 Mustang online customizer back in June, they announced that they would be giving away Mustangs to four lucky owners exactly how they designed them online. The third and latest customized Mustang has now been spoken for, going to Michael Corley, a police officer from Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.

How Ford delivered Corley’s custom Mustang is a story in itself, with the town’s police chief, Chris Atkins, playing a part. Both he and Corley were supposed to be going to “test ddrive new police pursuit vehicles” when a call comes in about a possible stolen Mustang. When Corley sees the car and pulls it over…well, you can probably imagine the rest.

The featured muscle car – 1968 Chevrolet Camaro C5R is 2013 Goodguys Muscle Machine of the Year Finalist! It has Doug Rippie Motorsports built C5R LS1 engine, Five speed TREMEC transmission, Full DSE suspension, Custom Forgeline wheels, C6 Z06 brakes, Custom fabrication everywhere, STACK gauges, 295 front, 345 rear tires![Via:musclevehicles.com]

Let’s look at the evolution of this muscle car from it’s creators:

Larry’s been tearing around in this car (he calls it “development,” of course…) and wound up at Goodguys in Charlotte in October.  He was there to do some autocrossing, and finishes FOURTH overall out of more than 30 entries, including ALL of the pro class cars!  Not bad for an ‘ol Camaro with a guy who started autocrossing this summer behind the wheel, wouldn’t you say? Click on NEXT  for more information and   photos!

Our first mod this time around was to stick more rubber at each corner.  We managed to fit 295/35ZR19′s up front and 345/30ZR19′s out back…without cutting the exterior sheetmetal!  Sure, fabricator Pete had to cut back into his inner fenders for clearance, but that’s a small price to pay for more than DOUBLE the widest tire available when the car was new!  Out back, we had some rubbing issues, so we replaced the DSE suspension links with chromoly tubing and Teflon-lined rod ends.  For more stiffness around through the cones we ditched the big 1″ splined sway bar in favor of a huge .250 wall 1.25″ bar, and we went with AFCO double adjustable coilovers at all four corners.  Inside, we added a pair of Porsche GT2 carbon fiber buckets and Simpson harnesses to hold us in place.  We’re better informed thanks to a full complement of STACK programmable gauges, and we feel cooler shifting with our new CNC milled shift handle.  A Sparco competition steering wheel finishes off the inputs.

Of course, the biggest change was bolting up a set of Forgeline centerlock wheels, 11″ wide in the front and 12″ wide in the rear.  We kept some flair with the polished lips, and the red locks echo the interior.  We dropped the car even further into the weeds now that it’s stiffer, and we can’t believe how this thing handles!

We’ve torn into the car again!  We’ve upgraded to an intercooled Magnacharger with 8psi of boost rather than the standard blower with 4psi.  This necessitated new coolers, and we went with an AFCO intercooler with twin SPAL fans as well as a CSR oil cooler with billet end tanks.  We’ve dumped some weight with a trick hood and decklid combo from Anvil, and JRi shocks are replacing the AFCO units.  There will be more by the time we’re finished!

Under the hood we added trick Katech valve covers and coil relocation brackets, upped the cooling with a new fan and baffled the power steering tank.  That’s the kind of stuff you figure out when you actually USE a car you build!Click on NEXT  for more information and   photos!

One of our own, dressed to kill with enough power to do it quickly. A supercharged, stroker C5R race block built up by Doug Rippie Motorsports resides within our custom engine compartment surrounds. The sound makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck, and those huge 335/30ZR18 Toyo R888 track day tires don’t stand a chance when you’re anywhere near full throttle in lower gears.[Via:musclevehicles.com]

The Detroit Speed and Engineering catalog was thrown at the car, with their fabricated subframe up front a four link out back. Mini tubs hold the extra rubber. Corvette C6 Z06 brakes lurk behind custom Boyd Coddington black V-Twin wheels. Fat sway bars and killer coil overs maintain a level stance no matter the curve.Click on NEXT  for more information and   photos!

Outside, we’ve shaved the door handles and wipers, and we’ve selectively blacked out trim. All new glass is in place, and of course all of the chrome is perfect. You’ll see the custom exhaust outlets poking out from the rocker panels–we custom fabbed those, too.[Via:musclevehicles.com]

Inside you’re enveloped in materials beyond those found in any production Chevrolet, ever. Attitude rises from the faux ostrich pattern on the doors and dash, as well as the bright red seat and door panel inserts. We went with a Covan dash holding a full array of gauges, a classic chrome stick connected to the five speed below and billet touches as we saw fit. It’s buttoned down and bad ass all at the same time.

1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1 Pro Touring

1969-chevrolet-camaro-zl-1-pro-touring-07

This muscle car is likely the most capable ZL-1 powered 1969 Camaro on the planet. To take it one step further, likely the most capable ZL-1 powered car, period. The owner took a great heritage of the ZL-1 and surrounded it with the best money can buy. The engine was built by one of the most reputable engine builders on the West coast from scratch with this exact application in mind. As you are about to see, everything on this car is top shelf and some of the best shops and manufacturers in the industry have been called on to contribute to the finished product.

This car has been sorted out extensively on the road and track. You can literally call it a car show, road race, autocross, drag race, and drive to and from the track in one weekend in this car. While it’s a dominator on the track, it has the modern sports car feel on the road we all desire. The ride, brakes, and steering are phenomenal. The handling and braking is a couple rungs up the ladder. It’s got unbelievable linear power but it will lope down the interstate at 1800 rpm in overdrive with the AC on and tunes blasting. It’s been tested to take any curve ball you can throw at it. It has proved to be extremely reliable with no mechanical failures of any type on the road or track after the ZL-1 was installed.

1969-chevrolet-camaro-zl-1-pro-touring-01

This car doesn’t just talk the talk, it walks the walk. Not only does it look great, it performs! It runs 0-100-0 in the 13 second range which is Corvette ZR1/Z06 & Dodge Viper territory. It also runs in the 11’s down the quarter mile. However, this car really shines in the handling department. This is the ultimate litmus test for a pro touring car. Check out some of the features :

The Start

The owner started with a very clean complete 307 survivor with less than 100,000 miles on the clock. Believe it or not, he picked this car up in Michigan and it was clean due to its inactivity. The owner stored it in his Mom’s garage for nearly 20 years and barely drove it. He kept all the original GM metal with the exception of the front fascia that had been replaced sometime in its life. The owner also added an aftermarket cowl hood for air cleaner clearance.

Body

Prodigy Customs in Florida did the dirty work. They took the complete car down to bare metal. They blocked the car out until it was flat as a board and then they sprayed it with base coat/clear coat Glasurit paint. It’s a very dark black and it’s got great depth and shine. The car got more compliments on the paint job than anything else.

They also added Detroit Speed & Engineering subframe connectors and mini tubs. A 4 point roll bar was added for structural rigidity and safety. It’s stiffer than a C6 vette. The firewall was shaved for a super clean look.

Engine(ZL-1 has roughly 3500 miles on the clock)

The heart of the beast is a custom built 489 Big Block ZL1 by Pettis Performance. Pettis Performance is based in Southern, CA and has a bullet proof reputation for building big, reliable horsepower. This engine is loaded with the best components available:

· GMPP ZL1 Aluminum Block (110 lbs)

It makes some serious average power. Pettis Performance nailed it!

Driveline

With all the power the ZL1 makes, the car needs a bullet proof driveline.

1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1 Pro Touring

Flying car concept from Volkswagen

No matter how much we advance in technology, lengthening lifespans, creating artificial organs, and plastering touchscreens of all sizes on absolutely everything, it won’t feel quite like the “future” until we can fly to work. That most basic element in depictions of the future, the flying car, has been absent from reality, somehow leaving us unconvinced of how far we’ve come. From Volkswagen, and a young gaming design student from Chengdu city, we get a flying car concept that fits not only our own desires for futurism, but also the closest idea yet to something that will effectively introduce flight into our daily routines.

Volkswagen-Hover-Car-floating-1024x640

The car basically has a spherical shape with space for two people inside. It has no wheel and floats a few inches above the ground. The image of the car floating in the middle of the street, when other autos are running on the road, is absolutely amazing. Circular glass discs have been fitted on the two ends of the car and an elongated glass panel has been fixed at the front. The glass and metal bubble looks utterly stupendous. The Volkswagen Hover Car is a pod-like zero-emissions vehicle that uses electromagnetic road networks to float above the road. The small Volkswagen has two seats and a joystick and, to demonstrate how the car would work, a Chinese couple appears to put the flying car to the test around the bustling streets of Chengdu. The two seem reluctant to climb aboard at first, but once they lift-off, they seem to enjoy all the attention the pod car gets.

During the 2009 SEMA show, Classic Recreations founder Jason Engel announced plans to work with Shelby American on the first series of officially licensed 1967 Shelby Mustang continuation cars. One year later at SEMA 2010, Engel brought not one but two G.T.500CR customer cars to the show after invitations from Ford Motor Company and Cobra Electronics to display vehicles in the company’s respective booths. The car from the Ford display was also called out as an “Ultimate Street Car” when Optima batteries asked Engel to participate in the annual Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational (OUSCI) track shootout and television show at Spring Mountain Raceway in Pahrump, Nevada, the Saturday after SEMA.

“Having two customer cars in major booths at the SEMA Show was really a coming out party for the G.T.500CR,” Engel said. “We are in full production and have shipped Shelbys all over the world, but having vehicles in the Ford and Cobra booths, then being chosen to take part in the OUSCI was a great thrill for us. Everyone knows we can build a beautiful car – this was our chance to show that we also build a fast car with the performance and reliability of a modern supercar. I think we proved that at Spring Mountain Raceway and we were truly honored that the crew at Optima chose us out of thousands of vehicles on display at SEMA.”

Both G.T.500CR Shelbys on display at SEMA were 545 horsepower Performance Models, one finished in classic wimbledon white and guards blue, the other featuring a two-tone gloss and matte black paintjob.  Both cars are powered by fuel injected, naturally aspirated, hand-built 427 cubic inch engines. Other features include a Tremec overdrive transmission, modern coil-over suspension with rack-and-pinion steering, modern vented disc brakes, a custom handcrafted interior featuring Carroll Shelby signature seats, custom gauges, brushed aluminum trim, and five-point harnesses. Each car is built by highly trained craftsman in the heart of America and require well over 1,000 hours of manual labor.

The stealth car was a key part of the Cobra Electronic booth display, where it was constantly surrounded by admirers and photographers.  The white car was part of the Ford Heritage Display directly across from the Ford drift exhibition next to the Monster Energy stage, where modern Mustangs demonstrated Ford performance in a cloud of tire smoke.

Saturday after the close of the SEMA Show, the white Shelby competed at the OUSCI in four competitions: autocross, road course, speed stop and engineering. As one of only three Fords in a field of 60 top-tier supercars, the G.T.500CR stood out and made an impression. When the tire smoke cleared, the Shelby finished in the top 20 on the road course.

“The G.T.500CR is meant to be driven,” says Engel. “Although the overall look is vintage Shelby, essentially this is modern sports car technology wrapped in vintage Shelby GT500 sheet metal. We had a blast watching the car do what it was built to do. Classic Recreations offers additional options on all our builds and next year we’re bringing out one of our supercharged, 780 hp “Venom” models with four-link rear suspension and we’ll really show them what we can do.”

The entire Optima event, from the pre-SEMA builds to the awards ceremony, was shot for a national TV show, which will air in early 2011 on a national cable network.
